Adult Surf Rescue Certificate (ASRC)

Course Description
The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) teaches CPR, basic first aid and spinal management, as well as rescue techniques using a tube and rescue board. Candidates obtain the skills and confidence to save lives and become an integral part of our lifesaving community:

  • Join regular beach patrols or request to be part of the Active Reserve Patrol (patrolling annually on Australia Day)

  • Assist with water safety for club events and programs (such as Nippers)

  • Receive a lifesaving uniform if you commit to patrolling

Course Prerequisites:

  • Be a current active member of Point Lonsdale SLSC

  • Be able to swim 200m in a pool and jog one lap of a footy oval (a slow jog is perfectly acceptable!)

  • Be aged 17 - 75

  • Be open to learning new things!

  • Be able to commit to all sessions

Skills Maintenance
An annual Skills Maintenance must be undertaken by 31st December to keep this award proficient.

Course Outcomes
The programs are designed to equip participants to a proficient standard in methods and techniques of Surf Lifesaving, including:

Be a current active member of Point Lonsdale SLSC

  • Surf awareness

  • Rescue techniques (boards/rescue tubes)

  • Resuscitation (CPR)

  • First aid

  • Communications

  • Radio operations

  • Standard patrol practices

  • Teamwork

  • Improve fitness

Assessment
Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. This will take place on the final day of the course.


Adult Bronze Medallion (ABM)

Course Description
The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a lifesaver in Australia. The Adult Bronze Medallion course includes 5 face-to-face sessions, including the first session and the final assessment day, both of which are mandatory. You’ll learn:

  • CPR and basic first aid

  • Spinal injury management

  • Rescue techniques using a tube and rescue board

Some of the theory components of the course will be self-paced, so you must be prepared to complete the on-line learning tasks between the face-to-face training sessions.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Be able to swim 400m in a pool, jog one lap of a footy oval (a slow jog is perfectly acceptable!)

  • Be aged 17 - 75

  • Be open to learning new things!

  • Contribute to the management of work health and safety (WHS)

  • Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control

  • Describe surfing and environmental conditions and hazards

  • Recognise appropriate beach types, conditions and areas in the surfzone for bathing

  • Demonstrate surf skills

  • Explain the functions of various systems in the human body

  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques

  • Perform basic resuscitation techniques (oxygen therapy, defibrillation)

  • Identify basic patient management techniques

  • Communicate in the workplace

  • Perform radio communications using approved SLSA radios

  • Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient

  • Identify people in distress in an aquatic environment

  • Perform surf skills

  • Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment

  • Set up a patrol and describe your role

  • Demonstrate standard patrol practices

  • Teamwork

  • Improve fitness

Please ensure that you renew your membership online once memberships are available. You will not be accepted to participate in the courses without a membership.

Please note that once you start this application you cannot save or leave it for later. Please leave 30 minutes to complete this application.

You will then be expected to complete a minimum of 2 years of lifesaving.
