Our New Era: PLSLSC Launches 2021 - 2026 Strategic Plan

Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club is pleased to release our new 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, Our New Era.

This ambitious new plan will see us become a stronger, community-focussed Club while continuing to deliver exceptional emergency response capabilities. In doing this, we will keep our purpose, to keep the community safe on our beaches, at the front of our mind.

As we look to open our new clubhouse in 2021, it is an exciting time for us to launch our new strategy. It truly is the start of Our New Era as we look to re-launch our club, consolidate our practices and sustain us into the future.

This plan also aligns us as a Club with our values:

  • Treating everyone respectfully - to value the rights and responsibilities of others and treat one another with dignity.

  • Acting responsibly and with integrity - to act safely at all times, caring for self and others.

  • Being inclusive - to celebrate and welcome diversity within our community.

  • Being courageous - to be curious and brave and encourage members to take the initiative and action.

To be truly effective, we ask that members take the the time to read our plan, understand what we’re about and help us to deliver on it. We want to unite our members behind this ambitious shared vision as we enter Our New Era.

The plan is divided into 4 themes, with 13 key focus areas:

  • Theme 1: Life Saving: Strive for excellence in our promotion and provision of aquatic safety and first aid services within the region.

  • Theme 2: Sports and Development: Strive for a welcoming sports culture that promotes participation, improves the health and wellbeing of our members, enhances their operational life saving skills whilst supporting high performance teams.

  • Theme 3: Community: Develop defined pathways and opportunities for members to be active, valuable and contributing members of the Club by deepening local community relationships, promoting equality, diversity and sustainability while enhancing the member experience.

  • Theme 4: Commerciality: Set up long-term strategies to ensure the ongoing financial health and viability of the Club.

We are extremely pleased with this plan and are very thankful to all who helped contribute over a period of more than 12 months. In particular, we would like to thank Michael Doery, Charlotte Furness, Jane D’Oliveyra, Bunny Carrigan and Andrew Pitney for all their help in the strategic planning working group.

We would also like to thank Anna Gowers and Shane Loorham for their amazing work in designing this wonderful looking document.

Our New Era starts today. If we can unite behind this plan and achieve all the goals we have set out, we will truly plant the seeds for the long term success of our Club.

Three new life members appointed at AGM

Point Lonsdale SLSC have endorsed the appointment of Michael Doery, James Coutie and Kirsten MacLeod as life members of the Association

Approval was given on a vote of members present at the Club’s virtual AGM held on 14 August 2021.

Club President, Charlie Pitney paid tribute to the three worthy members, stating:

Michael, James and Kirsten are incredible contributors to our club and have demonstrated this over many years. Our club is so lucky to have these three who have each made an immense contribution to further our life saving in different way. James from an operational patrol perspective, Michael from a leadership and governance perspective and Kirsten from a youth, leadership and fundraising perspective.

To have members of this calibre contribute to our club for sustained periods of over 15 years is a testament to each of them and something the club is so fortunate to be the beneficiary of.

These members will be officially presented as life members of the Association at a ceremony to be held at a later date.

A short bio of each of the members is below:

Michael Doery

Michael’s long standing involvement and contribution is worthy of receiving the Club’s highest honour. The highlight of his service was as Club President for six and a half seasons – our third longest serving President.

A major focus and effort during this time was to rebuild our ageing Clubhouse. Much time and effort was dedicated to engaging with the Borough of Queenscliffe, State Government and Life Saving Victoria to lobby for the need for this significant investment.

While it may seem like the location for such a building would be simple (to remain where we are), lack of government funding support at the time led to strong considerations for selling the club owned block and moving to crown land. Once it was realised that this was not a feasible option Michael was instrumental in working with Lisa Neville MP and the Borough of Queenscliffe to get to a position where the Borough would sell the adjoining leased land for $1, ensuring that the location for a new Clubhouse could be secured.

During Michael’s term as President a large storage and equipment shed was built at the Clubhouse which serviced the Club well for more than 10 years to safely and securely store lifesaving, aquatic sports and other Club equipment. Michael has continued to be involved in the club since the end of his presidency in various roles providing advice and wisdom in relation to the new clubhouse project and general governance advice.

James Coutie

Unknown-1.jpeg

James is a valued member of our association who has contributed both at club and at state level for a sustained period of over 16 years.

James has given sustained and conspicuous service to our Association and clearly meets the requirements. He has held numerous roles on the Executive Committee, General Committee and continues to patrol at our club as an active member (despite meeting the requirements to be considered Reserve Active). As a young leader in the club he is a role model for the youth and inspires many to become involved within the Association in addition to furthering their skills and knowledge by participating at state level.

Kirsten MacLeod

KMacLeod+pic.jpg.png

Kirsten's long standing involvement and dedicated contribution to the Club and community is worthy of her receiving the Club's highest honour. The highlight of her service has no doubt been her extraordinary effort as Chair of the New Clubhouse Capital Campaign Committee. Her dedicated and tireless leadership saw her and her team raise $2.25 million toward the new Clubhouse project.

Prior to this, Kirsten was the Director (Youth & Leadership Development) for many years, organising the club’s nippers program during between 2008-2012.

Kirsten’s has been instrumental in the the 'once in a multi-generational' effort of our new clubhouse project as without Kirsten's leadership these funds would not have been raised to this level so quickly. Raising over $2.25 million is the largest single Club fundraising effort and without it, we would not be in the position that we are now.

Kirsten’s father Alan MacLeod (Dec.) is also a life member of our club making Kirsten and Alan the first parent-child life member combination.

Life Member Receives Queen's Birthday Honour

Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club Life Member, Alan Joyce has been honoured for his sustained and conspicuous contribution to the life saving movement as well as the Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff Communities. Alan has received a Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition for service to surf lifesaving, and to the community.

From 1966 onwards, he has been a volunteer member of the Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club and during his lifetime involvement with the Surf Life Saving movement has made a contribution at a Club, District, State, National and International level.

In recognising the honour, club president Charlie Pitney said:

This is a wonderful achievement for a club member who has tirelessly and selflessly worked for the betterment of our community as a whole. Alan is someone who always puts others first and displays a sense of service to others, and to the life saving movement that is so strong it continues to be a positive influence on us all.

In 1966, Alan joined the Club. Once he obtained his basic lifesaving qualifications and performed normal volunteer beach patrol duties, he progressed onto training and assessing various life saving qualifications and also became a foundation member of the then Wales Surf Rescue Service, which provided specialist Jet Rescue Boat, Offshore Rescue Boat and Radio Communication services particularly to the Bellarine Peninsula / Surf Coast and Mornington Peninsula areas.

IMG_1060 2.JPG

The Offshore Rescue Boat was the first for Surf Life Saving and Alan was instrumental in the writing of a National Instruction Manual for the Offshore Rescue Boat area. During this period Alan represented the then Surf Life Saving Association of Australia in an educational tour to New Zealand to assist to educate life savers there and to bring back additional skills and knowledge. Alan has undertaken more than 1500 hours of voluntary patrol service for the Club through volunteer beach patrols and in excess of 15 000 hours of voluntary service through Jet Rescue Boat, Offshore Rescue Boat and Radio Communication duties as a member of the Wales / Westpac Surf Recue Service in Victoria. For 30 years Alan has assisted at the Club's largest annual fundraiser - the Rip Vie Swim Classic, Alan has been awarded numerous awards at his Club including Life Membership, Distinguished Service Awards, Nipper Service Award, President's Award, Best patrol person and Runner up best patrol person. Alan has held numerous committee positions during his time and continues to be involved in assisting with club property and vehicles.

Even though Alan has been very active in the Surf Life Saving movement he is an active volunteer in a wide range of other organisations and events.

Since moving to the Queenscliff / Point Lonsdale area move than 40 years ago, Alan has been very active in the following:

  • Rotary - Alan has been involved with Rotary since 1989. During his time in Rotary Alan has held positions including Board member, Committee member. Alan received the Paul Harris Fellow Award in 2006 for his then 26 years of service.

  • Good Friday appeal - The Queenscliff community has held a variety of different events and fundraisers for this important large fundraiser and Alan has been a keen volunteer at local efforts including the Seafood Feast (2002-2009), Busking for Kids (2010-2013) and Easter Eggstravaganza (2013-2015).

  • In 2001 Alan was a volunteer committee member for a community project, supported by the Borough of Queenscliffe to establish a Skate Park for the community. This was an important local project to give the youth of the area a suitable place to gather and undertake recreation and to this day is a popular location for younger members of the community to gather.

  • Since 1996 Alan has been an integral member of the small team that ensure that a large Norfolk Pine Tree is covered in lights for the Christmas period. The Point Lonsdale Christmas Tree is a local institution, having been lit for more than 50 years and since 1996 Alan has ensured it's tradition continues. From 1996 to 2014 Alan was the Chairperson of the Committee that not only installs / removes the lights but the associated community Christmas Carols that are held when the tree is lit at the start of November. Since 2015 Alan has remained as a Committee member and only a few weeks ago was there helping to take the expensive and extensive lights down.

  • For more than 21 years, Alan has volunteered at the Queenscliff Music Festival. The annual not for profit event is the areas largest annual event, which is a large economic and cultural benefit to the small Queenscliff / Point Lonsdale communities. In 2017 Alan was awarded Life Membership for his years of dedicated voluntary service.

  • From 2014 to 2018 Alan has assisted the Queenscliff Men's Shed with their annual program to recycle bicycles and gift these to disadvantaged / needy members of the community. Alan's past experience as a Mechanic and his part time business in electric bikes and scooters has been most valuable with this project work.

Alan's selfless contribution to the community through a wide range of organisations and activities has been recognized by two organisations that he is not formally a part of .The first was in 2011, Alan was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award by the Borough of Queenscliffe at their Australia Day Ceremony. The second was in 2010 when Alan was presented with a Community Award by the Lions Club International for his outstanding contribution to the Community.

Congratulations Alan - we are very proud to have you as a member of our club!

Thank you from the Nippers Team!

Dear Nipper Parents

Thank you!

The Nipper Committee would like to thank you all for your participation in a successful 2020/2021 Nippers program. Despite all the challenges that 2020 threw at us, we had 300+ Nippers and 100 instructors and also ran a Starfish Nippers Program on the beach over 7 days which is a terrific result.

Many changes to the program were required this year to ensure a COVID safe environment and together we rose to the challenge. This was in no small part due to all the volunteers, instructors and support of the Club which made this possible.

starfish.PNG

We have received positive feedback from parents about the organisation of Nippers this year, including the advantages of having defined areas for parents and nippers, smaller groups and a focus on skills acquisition. We plan to continue these changes next year and continue to refine and improve the program.  If you have any further feedback or suggestions, please email Nippers@plslsc.com.au.

EOI Special Helpers & Age Group Managers

If you are interested in a “special helper” volunteer role for next year, please email Nippers@plslsc.com.au. Typically these roles involve multi day attendance and/or co-ordination of daily parent volunteers. For example icy pole co-ordinator, water safety, gear collection, Nippers disco and back beach day.  The Club is also on the lookout for qualified IRB drivers and crew and can provide further information on the process if this is of interest to you.

In order to run Nippers in accordance with LSV requirements, we will require more Age Group Managers next year. Unlike other Clubs, our instructors do most of the heavy lifting, so this role does not require a big commitment.  Our Age Group Managers provide general assistance to the instructors, including by taking the attendance role, counting Nippers in and out of the water, and providing encouragement and support. It is easy to become a qualified Age Group Manager – you just need to complete two short online courses (why not knock these off now while it’s fresh in your mind?) and then the Club will sign you off after a short practical session on the beach during Nippers next season. Please email Nippers@plslsc.com.au if you would like information on how to qualify as an Age Group Manager.

Sponsors

We would like to thank the key sponsors whose generous donations make the Nippers program what it is:

Kerleys Coastal Real estate

Vitality Brands

Michael Limb Builders

Espresso Alfresco

All About Traffic

EOI Sponsors

If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities for the 2021/2022 Nippers program please email Nippers@plslsc.com.au. We have a range of sponsorship arrangements available and would be happy to discuss these with you. This is a great way to advertise your business and demonstrate support of community activities with a broad reach.

Season 2021/2022

Please monitor the Nippers page on the PLSLSC website (click on “Education”) for information on registration for the 2021/2022 program. It’s likely that, as before, registrations and swim tests must be submitted for all new and returning Nippers no later than 30 September 2021. All information will be posted on the website once available, including the Nipper calendar.

Wishing you and your families a safe and happy 2021 and we look forward to seeing your Nippers on the beach next December.

Kind regards.

Season Update: A very different year at PLSLSC

Dear members

Usually our summer period is filled with activities and social events which bring with them, a strong sense of community. This year, things are very different.

That being said, there have been lots of things happening and while things look different, a lot of volunteers have done some great work to ensure some of our programs can go ahead (including patrols, nippers, new clubhouse planning and strategic planning).

I wanted to write to you today to provide you with an update on what is happening this season and thank you for your ongoing commitment to our club. Excuse the long email but I wanted it to be as comprehensive and informative as possible.

While we have explored options to get some of the enjoyable features of our summer program to go ahead, due to a number of factors (including COVID-19 and not having a clubhouse) the decision has been made to go back-to-basics this season. We are focusing on our purpose as a club: to keep the community safe on our beaches.

Speaking of our new clubhouse: What do you think?

I think it looks incredible! Having had a chance to walk through the building, it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into how the building will operate. It is going to be so great for our club.

Though this season we are entering a sort of hibernation, next year we are going to be stronger,

I would love to know your thoughts, send me an email.

Some more photos of the building can be seen here.

Beach conditions

We all know Point Lonsdale Back Beach is one of the most dangerous beaches in Victoria. Part of our identity as a club is that we are courageous and tough when it comes to patrolling this beach. That being said, it is always important for us as a club to respect the volatile nature of the back beach.

The Club Captain reports that beach conditions this season are particularly rough. Between Christmas and New Years, volunteer lifesavers and LSV lifeguards (many of whom are club members) performed over 10 rescues.

Our LSV/LERT RWC Service have also attended to a number incidents involving crafts off Queenscliff and Portarlington.

update.PNG

It is also important for us to all consider whether we are swim-fit after a year of lockdown. When you’re about to enter the water, stop and ask yourself what your limitations are this season.

This all goes to show the importance of what we do as a club. Although there may not be many social events this year, it is important for you to know that as volunteers of our club, your contribution is so appreciated and vital to keeping the community safe on our beaches.

Nippers

I am so pleased that despite the current circumstances, our Nippers program has proceeded as close to normal as possible. We were very focused on ensuring that after a year of being stuck inside, we could put activities on for our younger members and allow them to have some fun over their summer holidays. We have approximately 300 participants, down from approximately 350 last year which is a great result!

Caroline Cotton, Lisa Moore, Simon Dale and Emilie Fary have done a great job of getting the nippers program over the line. They have been supported by Charlie Gough and Emily Manly and a team of wonderful instructors and water safety who have put their hands up, even though many of them missed out on doing Bronze and SRC this year due to COVID. Thank you for your contribution to our club!

image1 (1).jpeg

It is also important to acknowledge our COVIDSafe Officers, Janet Ashton and Matthew Ponsford who have done a mountain of work to keep everyone safe. You will notice if you attend any of our facilities there are QR Codes, hand sanitizer and a number of other provisions to reduce the chance of transmission of the virus.

Please don’t forget to pass on your thanks and appreciation to all our volunteers - I would love you to share any messages of thanks with the team. Feel free to send it to me to pass on.

Bronze and SRC

Disappointingly, we weren’t able to run a Bronze and SRC program this year for a variety of reasons, including:

  • We had over 100 applicants for the two camps but had strict capacity limits due to COVID-19;

  • We do not have a clubhouse and would have been running the program out of a marquee in Ganes Reserve. This had further implications on maintaining a COVIDSafe environment which would, in turn have the effect of further reducing the number of participants;

  • Some clubs did run bronze camps but they were very limited in terms of how they ran and they did not align with what we aim to achieve in our camps;

  • We did not have the volunteer capacity to manage running programs in the limited format other clubs did (across a number of different facilities with strict cleaning and social distancing processes).

Next year, we will be offering a much larger Bronze and SRC camp and have guaranteed spots for all applicants who missed out this year. We will be leaning heavily on Bronze and SRC parents over the year to help us pull this off. Having parents on board to run camps is essential. Please feel free to get in contact to find out how you can help, otherwise our camp team will be reaching out over the coming months.

New merch

It’s been awesome to see people around town wearing our new merchandise - I think it looks great! You can find the selection on our online shop!

I ordered a cap, a water bottle and a keep cup and it delivered to my place in Lonnie 2 days later!

Thank you to Helen Slattery for her work putting our new merchandise selection together. Thank you as well to Lorraine Robinson for helping to sell the stock at our nippers registration day.

We would love any feedback or suggestions for new items, let me know!

Strategic Plan

Over the past 12 months, the club has undertaken a process of putting together a new strategic plan. It has involved a member survey (in January 2020), a committee strategic planning session and a working group consisting of Bunny Carrigan, Michael Doery, Jane D’Oliveyra, Charlotte Furness and Andrew Pitney who have met with key stakeholders to identify our strategic priorities.

It is important that new strategic plan (which will take us up to 2026) will be well thought out because it is going to be key to our success once we have our new clubhouse. It focusses on how we can better improve our life saving capabilities, programs, commercial offering (food and beverage) as well as our engagement with members and the local community.

In the coming weeks, we are going to finalise a draft of the new strategic plan for member consultation. Please keep an eye out for it, it is important that we get member buy-in with this, a well aligned club will be key to our success!

So, what do the next 12 months have in store for us?

This season, we have taken a bit of a hit to our membership, we currently have 900 members, down from 1300 last season. This was somewhat anticipated in light of COVID and a second year without a clubhouse.

In addition to this, we have had to cancel our two largest fundraisers, the Rip View Swim Classic and the Nipper Doorknock. Obviously the club will take a financial hit from this, but I am not going to ask for money.

What I would love you to do now is think about this:

In 2021, we will be re-launching Point Lonsdale SLSC - what can I do to be part of this exciting new era in our history?

Have a think about:

  • can I do my Bronze (or requal a lapsed Bronze)? - even if it’s just to patrol one day a year…

  • can I join a committee or sub-committee and provide some of my professional expertise?

  • can I step up and become a parent helper at Nippers?

  • is there something the club does that could be better, and if so, how can I help improve it?

  • can I help to make the Rip View Swim a bigger and better event?

  • can I start a new initiative that will improve experiences of members or people in the broader community?

  • can my workplace become a potential sponsor of the club? Or do I know someone I can put the club in contact with to sponsor?

You don’t need to come up with an answer straight away but know this - next year we are going to have an amazing facility, we want our club to be a hive of activity all year round and become a central part of the Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff community. How do you want to be involved?

You may have seen an article on the front page of the Bellarine Times about Kirsten MacLeod and I taking Senator Sarah Henderson of a tour of the new clubhouse. In the article, I talk about our plan for opening the new facility. There has been a subcommittee led by Andrew Gourlay, Bec McHenry and John Hurley focused on how the new building will operate. It is going to be so exciting to see it all come into action.

I also talk about encouraging local families to become involved and take on leadership roles in the club. We have previously been considered a summer club, but we want to do more than that. We want to be inclusive, we want to be vibrant and we want the facility to be used for all sorts of programs by other community groups. I can’t wait for this to happen and it would be great for you to get on board!

Wrapping up

While it’s been a different season, that hasn’t stopped lots of things from happening. Thank you to all of you for your support of our club - despite what has been a challenging few month, it is so great that there is such good-will around the club that people are willing to help out.

It goes without saying that our amazing office staff, Ronnie and Caroline have provided such great support to our committee. They have dealt with challenging circumstances, a new office and ever-evolving plans. They have taken all of these difficulties in their stride. Ronnie was actually featured in a blog with all the life saving club admins this week in recognition of her great work.

I hope you continue to enjoy your summer break and stay safe.

As always, don’t hesitate to get in contact if any questions or issues you may have.

Kind regards

Charlie
