Course Description
The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a lifesaver in Australia.
Point Lonsdale SLSC is proud to offer training of the highest quality in the form of an intensive week-long training course. The annual courses are intended to be an intensive and high pressure program to push you to your limits and train you to become a surf life saver.
Course Pre-Requisites
Must be a financial Club member prior to course registration
Must be at least 15 years old within 60 days of the final assessment
Able to swim 400m in 9 minutes.

Skills Maintenance
An annual Skills Maintenance must be undertaken by 31st December to keep this award proficient.
Course Outcomes
The programs are designed to equip participants to a proficient standard in methods and techniques of Surf Lifesaving, including:
Contribute to the management of work health and safety (WHS)
Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control
Describe surfing and environmental conditions and hazards
Recognise appropriate beach types, conditions and areas in the surfzone for bathing
Demonstrate surf skills
Explain the functions of various systems in the human body
Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques
Perform basic resuscitation techniques (oxygen therapy, defibrillation)
Identify basic patient management techniques
Communicate in the workplace
Perform radio communications using approved SLSA radios
Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient
Identify people in distress in an aquatic environment
Perform surf skills
Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment
Set up a patrol and describe your role
Demonstrate standard patrol practices
Team work
Improve fitness
Assessment
Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. This will take place on the final day of the course.
Adult Bronze Medallion Information
The Adult Bronze Medallion course includes 5 face-to-face sessions, including the first session and the final assessment day, both of which are mandatory. You’ll learn:
CPR and basic first aid
Spinal injury management
Rescue techniques using a tube and rescue board

The Point Lonsdale 2024 Adult Bronze course is scheduled for late 2026

Achieving your Bronze Medallion is not only a fantastic personal achievement - it also gives you the skills and confidence to save lives and become an integral part of our lifesaving community:
Join regular beach patrols or request to be part of the Active Reserve Patrol (patrolling annually on Australia Day)
Assist with water safety for club events and programs (such as Nippers)
Receive a lifesaving uniform if you commit to patrolling
Complete the Expression of Interest form above to be kept informed about dates, registration and course updates.
Prerequisites:
Be a current active member of Point Lonsdale SLSC
Be able to swim 400m in a pool, jog one lap of a footy oval (a slow jog is perfectly acceptable!)
Be open to learning new things!
Some of the theory components of the course will be self-paced, so you must be prepared to complete the on-line learning tasks between the face-to-face training sessions.

Please ensure that you renew your membership online once memberships are available. You will not be accepted to participate in the courses without a membership.
Please note that once you start this application you cannot save or leave it for later. Please leave 30 minutes to complete this application.
You will then be expected to complete a minimum of 2 years of life saving.

Application Considerations
Due to the nature of these courses, we have to cap the amount of available places. Because of this, PLSLSC has developed application considerations that give weight to the below criteria. Please try to keep them in mind when writing your application.
past involvement / connection to the Club;
future ability and willingness to Patrol and to be actively involved with the Club;
past involvement in the Nipper program;
attendance at the SRC Course (JBM Course only);
a positive past patrol attendance record (JBM Course only);
other members of their immediate family (e.g. sibling / parent / guardian / child) being current members;
past involvement in Aquatic Sports (Surf Life Saving competition);
members of their extended family being current member;
residing in the Point Lonsdale / Bellarine area; and
having permanent accommodation available in the vicinity.
having a sound understanding of lifesaving and its importance
