From the President: Creating a culture of volunteering

Dear members

At our recent Annual General Meeting, I stated that as a Board, we are focussed on 'creating a culture of volunteering’ during our next season.

We are currently at one of the most exciting points in our Club’s history. We have record membership, a new Clubhouse and we are underway in the process of rebuilding our Back Beach Base. Now is the perfect time for our members to get involved in our Club and help us to deliver our 2021-2026 Strategy, Our New Era.

In the wake of COVID-19, recent statistics have pointed to a decline in the number of people volunteering. Well, what a perfect opportunity for our Club to prove that we have the best volunteers and really come together to create a vibrant culture of volunteering within the Club!

So, what does ‘creating a culture of volunteering’ mean?

  • It means ensuring that you re-qual this year and attend your rostered patrols;

  • It means signing up to do your Adult Bronze Course;

  • It means putting your hand up to help lead in one of our Programs;

  • It means making sure you do Nippers Water Safety or become an Age Manager;

  • It means cooking a BBQ on a cold nippers morning;

  • It means encouraging your kids to stay involved;

  • It means encouraging your parents to put their hand up for a leadership position;

  • It means not just saying ’the Club should do X, Y, Z’ but actually coming up with a solution and driving it forward.

What all of this means is actually ‘buying into this Club. It can only be a strong community based on volunteers if we’re all contributing, the more we all get out in both our personal and professional development.

In 2021, we launched our Strategic Plan, Our New Era. I encourage all members to read it and understand what we’re trying to achieve. Buy in and help us to become a leading Club.

In 2022, let’s build on the foundations we have laid in Our New Era and create a strong culture of volunteering.

Celebrating our members - Presentation Night Season 21/22

Our annual presentation night celebrates the achievements and commitment of our volunteers who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to our club and surf lifesaving over the previous season. This year’s event was notably special. Not only was it the first time in two years that we have been able to hold the presentation night in person, but it was also our first presentation night held at our new clubhouse. A number of awards from seasons 19/20 and 20/21 were also presented, as we were unable to hold presentation nights in these years.

New Clubhouse recognised at 2022 Victorian Architecture Awards

Photography: Tom Hunt Smith

Our new Clubhouse, designed by Jackson Clements Burrows, was recently awarded the Australian Institute of Architecture’s Award of Public Architecture at the 2022 Victorian Architecture Awards.

The jury said:

"The Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club displays Jackson Clements Burrows’ architectural skill, social and environmental concern, and aptitude at distilling the client’s brief into a resolved public building. The building clearly displays both the client and project team's ambition to create a shared meeting place and asset for the club and the broader community of Point Lonsdale.

In addition to its expressive form, consistent palette and thorough attention to detail, the building remains respectful of the scale, character and amenity of its surroundings. It is at once practical, warm, social, and generous. Its corner kiosk, long bench at its entry and neighbourly batten fences typifies this spirit.

The building has a clear, consistent, and successful parti. Its triangular plan addresses a dune and public reserve, sheltering a generous open lawn. Well-planned services and back of house spaces are neatly separated from communal areas, which maintain the looseness to accommodate both informal and formal gatherings. The lawn, terraced deck, balcony, and children’s room speak to coastal lifestyles and evoke an inviting and casual shared domestic atmosphere."

Congratulations to the project team, client, builder Lyons Construction and our collaborators for this recognition.

You can find more information about the project here.

Club members recognised at Borough of Queenscliffe Community Awards

Two Club members have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the community at the Borough of Queenscliffe’s Community Awards. Liam Petrie-Allbutt was awarded Citizen of the Year, while Eleanor MacLeod was awarded Young Citizen of the Year.

Point Lonsdale Primary School’s ‘Nippers in Schools’ Award, which was proudly support by PLSLSC and run by local parents (and club members) won the Community Organisation of the Year Award.

In a media release, the Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor, Cr Ross Ebbels stated:

“I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand the relentless energy this community puts into making the Borough a caring, connected and welcome place to live,” Cr Ebbels said. “Congratulations and thank you to all of our nominees. It takes a special kind of contribution to be nominated for such a prestigious award, and I am honoured to be able to call you all members of our community.”

Citizen of the Year was awarded to Liam Petrie-Allbutt for his many volunteering and leadership roles across the Borough, which include contributions to the Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club, Queenscliffe Maritime Museum, Queenscliffe Historical Museum and the Point Lonsdale Christmas Tree Lighting Committee.

Eleanor Macleod took out the Young Citizen of the Year award for her various aquatic and surf life saving volunteer work.

Club President, Charlie Pitney stated:

“We are so lucky to have the likes of Liam and Eleanor at our Club. Over many years, both of these members have put in so much time and effort to make our club great. Their contributions over the past 12 months have been particularly outstanding.

We are also lucky to have those who have so passionately driven the Nippers in Schools program through Point Lonsdale Primary School. At one of our AGMs three years ago, two parents, Kylie and Charlotte attended and asked why we didn’t do more with the primary school. From that moment, they have worked tirelessly to establish this program, working with life member Roger Lloyd, in particular to get this important program up and running.
